Jiufen (九份)

Jiufen (九份) is a mountain town located at Rui Fang Town (瑞芳鎮); Taipei County. Jiufen started out as a gold mining town. However, the town went into decline after gold mining activities declined after World War II. The town flourished once again in 1989 after the movie “A City of Sadness”, where the film was set. Jiufen is one of the best places in Taipei for sea viewing.

Jiufen attraction includes Jiufen Old Street (九份老街), Gold mining Museum (金瓜石博物館), Sheng Ping Theater (昇平戲院) and Keelung hill (雞籠山). The special part about Jiufen Old Street (九份老街) is their Japanese colonial period houses and countless teahouses situated along the staircase way. Gold mining Museum (金瓜石博物館) was official opened in 2004. Gold mining Museum housed the old tunnel and others gold mining display. Sheng Ping Theater (昇平戲院) started out as a wooden stage situated along Keelung street. Due to its unsafe working conditions, Sheng Ping Theater moved to Deng Qi road (豎崎路) in 1927 and became the 1st theater in north Taiwan of its times. Keelung hill (雞籠山) is a 588m above sea level hill which offer a bird eye view of Jiufen town and Yin Yang Sea (陰陽海). Last but not least, the famous Jiufen delicacies which include 九份傳統魚丸, 杏飽菇, 深坑燒烤臭豆腐 and many more.

Tourists can get to Jiufen (九份) by train. Alighting at Ruifang station and take a bus (Keelung transport company/基隆客運) to Jin Kua Shi (金瓜石) and alight at Kee Shan street (基山街).
